Description according to traditional Chinese medicine: 
This is a modification of the original traditional Chinese herbal mixture SUAN ZAO REN WAN, adjusted to meet today’s needs. This mixture feeds deficient blood in the liver GAN XUE XU, calms down the mind SHEN, cools down heat RE and eliminates irritability. In case of deficient blood in the liver GAN XUE XU, blood XUE which feeds the heart XIN is also deficient. This deficiency of blood XUE XU results in secondary heat due to deficiency RE XU, which then deposits in the chest and attacks the heart XIN; this causes irritability, inner restlessness, inability to sleep, palpitations, night sweats, dry mouth and throat. Deficient blood XUE XU does not control (“cannot hold and anchor”) yang YANG SHI, which ascends and may cause dizziness, vertigo and headaches. When, on the other hand, YIN ascends and YANG descends, the person may fall asleep. While we are awake (over the day), our soul SHEN resides in the eyes. At night, when the eyes are closed, it returns to the liver GAN. In case of deficient blood in the liver GAN XUE XU, the liver cannot fully hold retain the soul SHEN, which results in insomnia.
