Description according to traditional Chinese medicine: This is a modification of the original herbal mixture JIA WEI XIAO YAO WAN, adjusted to meet today’s needs. This mixture is rather new and has been created in response to the use of hormonal contraception (HC), with all their consequences, including acne which often appears after their discontinuation. It almost looks like when a woman uses hormonal contraceptives, she has no problems with menstruation or with the skin. Quite to the contrary – because of the hormones, the woman’s organism artificially changes and sets up an entirely new regime than would the woman would experience naturally and without hormones, in all parts of the body, soul, emotions… This artificially maintained “bubble” suddenly bursts when HC is discontinued – as if all that was lying beneath is fully exposed, the woman’s organism naturally wants to get rid of the chemistry and get back to its ordinary ways. There is no need to write about how hard it is to enter the same river twice. The more and the deeper HC leaves its mark in the organism, the longer the return to the “normal” takes. The acne is caused by an imbalance in conception (and also hormonal) pathways CHONG and REN MAI. This imbalance is caused by the use of synthetic hormones (not only HC but also thyroid hormones, corticoids, etc.) which maintain blood circulation in a pseudo-balance artificially. However, the quality and flow rate of blood XUE is weakened permanently, with subsequent blood stagnation YU XUE, later changing into heat in the blood RE XUE. This heat then gets out of the blood in the form of miscellaneous pimples, pustules, subcutaneous swelling and nodules, acne – “blemished skin” in general. Other typical manifestations include spreading of small blood vessels in the face, redness and flushing of the face in heat and during stress, worsened acne before menstruation and during ovulation (mid-cycle), premenstrual syndrome (bodily and mental irritation and imbalance before menstruation). Acne affects the nose, cheekbones, the area around the mouth and also between eyebrows. The tongue is usually red, especially its tip. Treatment is also conditional upon lifestyle adjustments (elimination of fried meals, dairy products, sweet and fatty meals).
