Description according to traditional Chinese medicine: This is a modification of the original traditional Chinese herbal mixture TIAN WANG BU XIN WAN, adjusted to meet today’s needs. This mixture is intended against difficulties caused in particular by an excess of work, mental exhaustion and long-time mental problems which drain the yin essence of the kidneys and the heart SHEN/XIN YIN XU; it is then manifested by insomnia or superficial sleep with frequent waking, palpitations, anxiety, restlessness, impaired mental performance, forgetfulness or difficult concentration. Other possible effects are aphtha, night sweats or drier stools. In our case this involves deficient kidney and heart yin SHEN/XIN YIN XU, when the kidneys SHEN and the heart XIN do not communicate together. The heart XIN controls blood XUE and keep the soul SHEN. Under normal circumstances, the imperial fire of the heart XIN HUO descends and heats the ministerial fire of the kidneys SHEN HUO. The kidneys preserve water, which ascends and cools down the heart XIN. If communication between the imperial fire (heart XIN) and the ministerial fire (kidneys SHEN) is good, water and fire are in balance, just like the kidney essence SHEN JING and heart blood XIN XUE. Under these conditions, the soul is at peace, well-anchored and stable. In the opposite case, because of a stressful lifestyle which literally “burns” the yin essence and blood, the kidney pathway SHEN and the heart pathway XIN are disconnected. Deficient heart blood XIN XUE XU is manifested through palpitations with anxiety, restlessness and forgetfulness. Deficient blood and yin XUE/YIN XU result in fire due to deficiency HUO XU, which makes the soul in the heart XIN SHEN restless and causes irritability, insomnia, restless sleep, sleep disturbed by unpleasant dreams, waking up, inability to think and concentrate. In case of deficient kidney essence SHEN JING, the soul SHEN ascends into the heart XIN and causes night sweats and aphtha or pustules on the tongue and in the mouth or drier stools. This mixture is suitable as a complement to the use of tranquillizers or medicines for insomnia.
