Description according to traditional Chinese medicine: As usual in TCM, the menstrual cycle can be described and visualized as a process naturally occurring in the nature. Let us imagine a reservoir which is supplied with water by a river. The thickness of the wall corresponds to the size of the reservoir (womb). Once a month its capacity gradually fills up to the optimum level and then it is necessary to raise the sluice gates and release some water, otherwise the dam could rupture or water overflow, causing floods (stagnation of qi energy QI ZHI). The opposite condition is equally harmful, where the spring (essence of the kidneys SHEN JING) does not provide sufficient water (lack of blood XUE XU) and the reservoir dries up (lack of blood and subsequent block YU XUE XU). Likewise, it dries up in case of excessive heat (heat in the blood RE XUE). Water should be liquid in the reservoir, otherwise it will freeze up (coldness HAN in the womb). If there are impurities in the water, they may clog the discharge openings (blood blocks YU XUE).
